What is the free boiler grant (ECO3 scheme) and why is it free?
The government launched the replacement boiler grant scheme in 2013 with two simple aims: –
- To reduce the UK’s energy consumption by making homes more efficient
- To help low income homes become more energy efficient
The scheme is part of the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) which was passed in Parliament in 2012 and runs until 2022. Funded by the UK’s largest utility companies, the scheme is part of the Home Heating Carbon Reduction Obligation (HHRCO) and contributes to the UK’s carbon reduction targets. It aims to provide private homeowners on qualifying benefits to receive both a free boiler and free insulation, with the overarching aim to reduce fuel poverty amongst low-income households. This is done by ensuring that heat is generated as efficiently as possible and is prevented from escaping from the home.
This means that qualifying households will be playing their part in reducing carbon emissions to zero by 2050. You can check whether you are eligible for this scheme by completing a simple pro forma here.
UK home owners could be eligible for a fully funded, or heavily discounted, boiler along with receiving free, or heavily discounted, insulation which will result in cheaper energy bills as your home becomes more energy efficient. See the link to household saving table below.

Insulation installation usually takes 2-4 hours depending on property size.
When is my free cavity wall extraction booked in for and how long will it take?
Cavity Wall Extraction usually takes 1-3 days.
When is my free boiler being installed and how long will it take?
Boiler installation usually takes up to 4 hours.
What brand of boiler will I receive?
I want to move my boiler when I get my new one replaced, will there be a charge?
I want a bigger boiler than the one I’m getting, can I change it and will there be a charge?
Our detailed energy efficiency survey will confirm the appropriate boiler specification for the property type and size. If you wish to put a bigger boiler in then the additional charge will have to be paid for by yourself – we do not recommend this as it goes against the philosophy of the scheme in terms of energy efficiency. This is because the ECO3 scheme only covers the amount recommended by the survey, so please be aware of this when requesting changes like this.
